In the realm of modern technology, the demand for reliable and long-lasting power sources is ever-increasing. One such power source that has proven to be exceptionally beneficial is the Lithium Thionyl Chloride (Li-SOCl2) battery. This battery type is renowned for its high energy density, long shelf life, wide operating temperature range, and voltage stability.
These features make it an ideal choice for various applications and is why Neptune uses it in our MACH 10 meters, which can last up to 20 years without needing to be charged, or replaced. Utilities already have enough to worry about, we want to ensure a battery isn’t one of them.
High Energy Density
One of the standout features of Lithium Thionyl Chloride batteries is their high energy density. Energy density refers to the amount of energy stored per unit volume or mass. Li-SOCl2 batteries boast one of the highest energy densities among primary batteries, typically ranging from 500 to 700 Wh/kg.
For ultrasonic water meters like the MACH 10, this high energy density is crucial. We want our meters to be set-it-and-forget-it and they’re designed to measure water flow accurately over long periods, often in remote or hard-to-reach locations. The high energy density of Li-SOCl2 batteries ensures that the MACH 10, can operate continuously for many years without requiring battery replacement, thereby reducing maintenance costs and efforts.
Long Life Expectancy
Another significant advantage of Li-SOCl2 batteries is their longevity. They can retain their charge for extended periods, often up to 10-20 years, without significant loss of capacity, typically discharging less than 1% per year.
Once installed, the batteries can power the meters for their entire operational life, which can be up to 20 years for the MACH 10. A reliable battery is vital for electronic water meters to maintain efficient operation when installed in harsh environments such as an outdoor, meter pit.
Wide Operating Temperature Range
Li-SOCl2 batteries are also known for their wide operating temperature range. They can work in temperatures ranging from -67°F to 185°F or -55°C to +85°C. This wide temperature tolerance makes them suitable for use in various environments, from cold to extremely hot conditions.
Ultrasonic water meters are often installed outdoors, exposing them to varying weather conditions. The ability of Li-SOCl2 batteries to operate reliably across a wide temperature range ensures that the water meters function accurately and consistently, regardless of external temperatures. These tolerances are particularly beneficial in regions with extreme weather, where other battery types might fail.
Voltage Stability
Voltage stability is another critical feature of Lithium Thionyl Chloride batteries. These batteries provide a stable voltage output throughout their discharge cycle, typically around 3.6V. This stable voltage is essential for devices that require a consistent power supply to function correctly.
For ultrasonic water meters, voltage stability ensures that the meters can provide accurate readings over their entire operational life. Fluctuations in voltage can lead to measurement errors, which can be problematic for billing and water management purposes. The stable voltage output of Li-SOCl2 batteries eliminates this concern, ensuring reliable and accurate performance.
Li-SOCl2: The Right Choice for MACH 10
Neptune required a battery that worked as hard as our meters for continued use in the harshest conditions. Li-SOCl2 allows the MACH 10 meter to accurately measure water for up to 20 years so our customers can operate more efficiently.
A common concern about battery-powered meters is the fear of batteries running out and causing interruptions. Here’s the good news: the battery inside the MACH 10 is built to last for up to 20 years. That’s about as long as the meter itself is designed to operate, so you can install it and trust it to keep working for decades—without having to replace the battery or worry about it dying unexpectedly.
